Reflective Journaling vs. Proactive Journaling

I have journaled on and off for most of my life.

For years, journaling for me looked mostly like reflective journaling — writing about what had already happened. Processing difficult conversations, hard days, complicated feelings. Sometimes that kind of reflection can be really helpful.

But other times it feels like I am just rehashing something painful. Almost like I am reliving the experience all over again. When that happens, journaling can become exhausting, and eventually I drift away from the habit altogether. Sometimes the process can feel like it keeps me in that loop thinking where I can spiral.

I have tried several different journaling methods, but they all seem to end the same way…I stop journaling.

And yet, I know that writing things down helps me process my thoughts and feelings. I know it can be life-giving.

Recently, I noticed something interesting.

When I journal proactively instead of reflectively, something shifts.

Instead of writing about what already happened, I write about what is coming. What I want. What I hope to embody. How I want to show up in the world.

When I journal this way, I can literally feel the difference in my body. My nervous system softens. My brain feels clearer. Instead of draining me, the practice fills me up.

So I decided to try something simple.

I wrote one proactive journaling question for each day of the month and placed those prompts directly into my planner. My goal is to answer one prompt each day for the next thirty days.

At the end of the month, I plan to circle back and reflect on the experience.

Stay tuned.
